Krewe of Gambrinus - Galveston, Texas

King Gambrinus XXII and Queen of the Krewe 2011

Gambrinus King and his Queen!

The King: King Gambrinus XXII is Joe Byers - Joe and his wife Shirley have lived in Alvin for the past seven years, but they have been in the Galveston area since 1986. Joe and Shirley are celebrating their 41st anniversary this year the day before our parade. Joe is the Systems and Contracts Manager for Palletized Trucking Inc., which has provided the transportation to get our parade beads from New Orleans to Galveston for the past ten years. Joe has been a member of Krewe since 1999, and this is his eighth year on the Royal Court. He is currently serving on the Membership Committee, and has previously served as Chairman of the Summer Splash Committee, Chairman of the Brew Ha Ha Committee, and member of the Ways and Means Committee. Joe and Shirley's family includes their son, Sean Byers, wife Rachael, and 5-month-old grandson Cole, and daughter Shannon, husband Tim, and 2-year-old granddaughter Molly. Joe enjoys cooking and fishing. As King, he is looking forward to serving as an ambassador for the Krewe, the Mardi Gras celebration and Galveston Island. Joe encourages everyone to join the festivities as King Gambrinus Lights up Broadway with the best parade and best beads: L'aissez les bon temps rouler!

The Queen: Her Royal Highness is Wilma Frye - Wilma is the Krewe's 22nd Queen. A member of the Krewe for 12 years, she has served for 11 years as a Co-Float Captain with her husband Steve on the theme float, been a member of several committees, and participated as a Duchess on the Royal Court for five years. Besides Steve, her family includes daughter Charlotte, son, Thomas, five granddaughters and four great-grand children. Wilma retired from UTMB after 16 years of service. Mardi Gras is such a special time of the year for Wilma, and she is thrilled to be the Queen to reign over the 2011 Mardi Gras season. "The city hums during the day and sings at night and the spirit of make believe comes alive and gets down in your soul," says Wilma. "It's Galveston's premiere party season, a time to enjoy life and have a good time." She invites everyone to join the celebration as we Light up Broadway with a parade of brightly colored floats, marching bands and fabulous costumes down Seawall Boulevard. "Come on down and watch our parade and catch some great beads as Gambrinus lights up the night". Let the fun begin!
